DIVISION V:
GEOMAGNETIC OBSERVATORIES, SURVEYS AND ANALYSES

The objectives of IAGA Division V are 1) to promote high quality standards in geomagnetic data acquisition, observatory and survey procedures, geomagnetic indices, and data dissemination, and 2) to analyse magnetic observation data for the purposes of understanding the various sources of the magnetic field.  Three working groups are active in this respect.

Working Group V-OBS
: Geomagnetic Observation

Working group V-OBS coordinates all issues related to the operation of geomagnetic observatories around the world. The WG sets quality standards for measurements and for data processing, and supports observatories in need of modern instrumentation or those in danger of closure. It cooperates with INTERMAGNET and is responsible for the organisation of a Workshop On Geomagnetic Observatory Instruments, Data Acquisition and Processing every two years. The working group maintains a list of observatories operating worldwide.

Working Group V-DAT: Geomagnetic Data and Indices

This working group defines formats for data exchange and sets quality standards for indices of magnetic activity. The latest format for observatory data dissemination is the IAGA2002 format. Numerous indices of magnetic activity exist and new ones are often developed for different scientific purposes. WG V-DAT cooperates with ISGI and is responsible for assessing and recommending new indices for official adoption by IAGA.

Working Group V-MOD : Geomagnetic Field Modeling
The main task of WG V-MOD is to coordinate international scientific efforts to model and understand the
internal geomagnetic field. In particular, the WG assesses and adopts a new International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) every five years, from candidate models submitted by different research groups. A special task group of WG V-MOD members was in charge of coordinating the development of the first World Digital Magnetic Anomaly Map, published in 2007.
